Display of the American Flag lapel pin

April 23, 2018

The United States Flag Code Section 8(J) states the following about wearing an American flag pin: “The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.”

Original Photographs from the Civil War Era

April 4, 2013

Please read the instructions before viewing…These pictures are very profound. It is fortunate that these photos have survived. Most probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate.Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many were used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear.

These are pretty amazing considering they were taken over 150 years ago: A compendium of photos from era of the War Between the States. Run the cursor over the photograph and the picture caption will pop up. Click photo to enlarge and read the rest of the caption.

Proud to be a Veteran

August 15, 2012

Don’t let the years go by without contacting the friends you made in the military. It’s much easier now than before.  Just drop an email and say hello and at some time in your lives get together again. Always be proud of the job you did.  Every job is important and it takes everyone to pull off a mission.  Saying that “I was only a clerk” or “only a mechanic” doesn’t meet muster.  You represent only a fraction of the population of this great country that took the oath to “support and defend the constitution of the United States of America against all enemies, both foreign and domestic”.  You can’t take that lightly.  What you did serving this country makes you special!  How you performed your job was special.  Don’t minimize that honor. Write your story down for your generations.

The internet provides an amazing research tool.  You can locate and identify organizations that celebrate the memory of the units that you once served with.  Use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and type in your past unit designator.  You may be surprised to find an alumnus organization already exists for that unit.  You may also find that past acquaintances and friends are involved.  Many have newsletters that include history, photos, and interesting material.  Some have publications which may provide an email address for an old buddy that will allow you to renew that contact.

Don’t put this off, do it today!
